When you look up Red River County Park located at N9455 County Road DK in Luxemburg, WI 54217 (part of Kewaunee County), you will see that it is known for its baseball diamond, practice field, and play area with picnic shelter and grills.  All you need is to bring some food and your own grill tool kit and you'll be good to go.  For this post though, I would like to turn your attention to the natural side of the park that has a great view of the Red River and the Bay of Green Bay.

My friend and I discovered this county park traveling through southern Door County.  It was such a beautiful place to stop, stretch, and enjoy watching the waves roll onto the sandy shoreline and admire the leaves falling off the trees, gently flow down the Red River, and spill into the Bay.

Red River County Park is less than a half hour drive from Lambeau Field in Green Bay where the  popular Green Bay Packers play football and less than a half hour drive from the Door County area.  There is no cost to enter this park, so it is a wonderful place to take your family and enjoy some free time in the great outdoors.

One of the first things I noticed when I got out of the car, was all the clam shells along the shoreline.  A few years back I had found a bunch of these along the Rock River, brought them home, and my daughter made a bunch of candles out of them for Christmas gifts.  Now, whenever I see clam shells, I am reminded of her hard work and all the people who loved her creative gift giving that year.  I had to collect a few to bring home to my boys.  There's nothing like free souvenirs from nature.  They were happy to receive them when I returned home.

Many sticks, rocks, pebbles, driftwood, shells, Zebra mussels and other forms of nature are found along the shore having been washed up with the waves.  A look at their Facebook page reveals someone who found some fossils in some of the rocks here.  It provides plenty of opportunities for endless discoveries.  I was particularly fond of the markings on this stick.  The plethora of rocks varied in size and texture, color and shape.

This particular tree was stunning.   It had already lost all of its leaves which made for some interesting photos.  I can't decide if I like it better in black and white or color, so I put both up.  Again the textures drew me in.

From doing a little research around the web, I discovered that this is a great place to come and see the Aurora Borealis, watch migrating pelicans and other birds, and go ice fishing in the winter.

Even though it's the bay that leads to Lake Michigan, you still get that Great Lakes feel when you look out.  The lake seems to go on forever.

While I did love this county park, I feel the need to add the fact that I did see litter throughout the beach front.  Whether it was tossed ashore from the lake or left by park goers, I want to take the time to urge you to always leave nature better than you found it.  Please take your garbage with you when you leave or deposit it in a garbage can.  Working together, we can keep our county parks a clean place for others to enjoy for many generations.  By doing your part, you help to protect the planet and be a good steward of the amazing gifts God has given us to enjoy.

My friend made a little still life for us to photograph with a few pieces she found on the shore.  You can see that just moving around a little and getting a different angle, created three very unique perspectives.  If you love photography, this is certainly a good place to play around and create a few fun and creative nature images.

Zebra Mussels are actually invasive species and are not very good for the water, but they are quite interesting to look at.

The reflections in the Red River were breathtaking.  I found myself enjoying the abstract look of the fall colors being reflected in the water.

Shoreline in Fall

Have you ever just been so in awe of the most simplest of things?  I was so mesmerized by leaves floating down the Red River.  I started thinking about what a small, momentary, temporary beauty it was.  The leaf would fall, float gently for about a half-a-minute before becoming water logged.  For one small moment in time, the leaf would float down the quick-flowing river, causing reflections or pretty ripples before the river waters got the best of it and overtook it.  Yet, for that small amount of time, it gave me a sense of awe and wonder in our God who creates beautiful moments like this for us to enjoy.  We just need to get out there with our eyes wide open and find them.  Check out the perfect little heart ripple at the end of the stem.  It is so amazing!  Just a little love sent from above made visible just for me in that moment in time.

This leaf happened to be shaped like a heart as well.  I loved the little ripples formed around it. I am always in awe of the little things God sends my way to remind me of His great love for me.  These leaves were just the thing I needed in that moment.  Red River County Park is always changing.  I imagine that it looks very different from day to day.  Large storms will push new things onto the shoreline and move things around, making it an exciting place to visit every time you are in the area.

Enrichment Ideas For When You Come Home
